Sundt Begins Work on Port San Antonio's Innovation Center

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Sundt Construction, Inc. recently started construction on Port San Antonio's Innovation Center, located in the heart of the 1,900-acre technology and innovation campus. The Innovation Center will help advance the port's vision of a world-class facility that promotes technologies, collaborations, education at all levels, and creates well-paying jobs for the region.

The facility will be in the heart of the campus that is already home to over 80 employers and their more than 14,000 employees that include leading names in the aerospace, cybersecurity, robotics, and defense sectors.

"This project is transformative for the port and the city of San Antonio," said Jon McKelvain, Sundt’s Project Executive. "We are excited to be part of the team that's advancing the region's presence in the digital and cybersecurity spaces and seeing the collaboration and career opportunities the Innovation Center creates."

The 127,000-square-foot Innovation Center will prominently feature a 2,500-person multipurpose arena on the building's southeast side. The new facility will host various events, including concerts, electronic gaming, technology competitions, and trade shows.

Additional components of the $53-million center will also include a new home for the San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology, a showroom to demonstrate innovations being developed throughout the San Antonio community, and a “maker space” where universities, startup ventures, and mature industry sectors can collaborate in the development of next-generation technologies.

“The upcoming innovation center will allow us to scale-up our strategic framework of connecting people, educators, and industry in our region, across the nation, and around the world,” said Port President and CEO Jim Perschbach. “To deliver a world-class facility takes top-tier partners, and we are proud to count on the expertise of the Sundt team among our collaborators.”

In 2019, Port San Antonio entered into a pre-development agreement with American Triple I Partners LLC to refine plans to build the Innovation Center. Sundt joined and supported the Triple I team during the pre-development process. The port’s Board of Directors approved the project in August 2020, and completion is expected in early 2022. San Antonio architect RVK has designed the project.

Sundt has 50 years and nearly $3 billion of project experience in the Lone Star state, with offices in San Antonio, Dallas, and El Paso. The company is currently busy in the downtown San Antonio area working on the San Pedro Creek Improvements, Canopy by Hilton Downtown San Antonio, and recently completed the new CPS Energy Headquarters renovations.
