HKS Wins 2023 AIA Healthcare Design Award for Moody Outpatient Center at Parkland Hospital in Dallas

DALLAS, TX — Global design firm HKS has won a 2023 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Healthcare Design Award for the Moody Outpatient Center at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

The annual award honors the “best of health care building design, health care planning, and health care design-oriented research,” according to the AIA. Winning projects exhibit “conceptual strength” that addresses the specific concerns of their communities as well as “functional and sustainability” concerns as they relate to health care.

The award is decided by a jury of AIA members. This year’s jury included Asia Allen (Gresham Smith), Walter Jones (Campus Transformation at the MetroHealth System), Ashley Mulhall (Winslow), Akshay Sangolli (Page Southerland Page, Inc.), Molly M. Scanlon (University of Arizona Zuckerman College of Public Health), and Eurico Francisco (Callison RTKL) as Chair.

“Industry recognition for our design work affirms HKS's commitment to design excellence,” said Jason Schroer, Global Practice Director of Health at HKS. “Moreover, it reflects our obligation to our clients and communities to create spaces and places that support positive outcomes. Design can really make a difference.”

Moody Outpatient Center consolidates two dozen multidisciplinary outpatient clinics as a part of the public Parkland Health system that has served Dallas County for more than 120 years.

Located on Parkland’s main hospital campus, Moody Outpatient Center features a light-filled atrium that serves as each floor’s shared waiting area and bisects its two clinical wings. The center hosts a variety of care types, including the Moody Center for Breast Health, an HIV clinic, and both medical and surgical oncology.

Beyond the central atrium, the design of each clinical wing is centered on a network of standardized clinic pods optimized for streamlined patient-care flow and the ability to adapt to service line changes or future growth.

The center was also designed to reduce embodied carbon use and is LEED Gold-certified. The sustainable use of prefabricated facade panels decreased construction time and costs.
