PCL Construction/Sundt Awarded Pre-Construction Contracts on Two New Treatment Projects

EL PASO, TX — The PCL Construction/Sundt joint-venture team was recently awarded two pre-construction projects with El Paso Water Utilities. Pre-construction activities will prepare for upgrades and an expansion on the Roberto R. Bustamante Wastewater Treatment Plant (RRBWWTP), originally built in 1991, and the construction of a new facility, an Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) on the effluent side of the Bustamante WWTP. Both projects will expand the city’s access to potable water, improving the quality of life for thousands of residents.

"We are passionate about the critical role water and wastewater infrastructure plays in healthy, thriving communities,” said Mike McKinney, PCL Senior Vice President, Civil. “The team is thrilled to bring our solution-focused approach to the expansion of the RRBWWTP and the new forward-looking AWPF — both critical to the expanding El Paso community.”

The $400 million project will optimize the facilities at the Roberto R. Bustamante Wastewater Treatment Plant, expand overall treatment capacity from 39 MGD to 51.4 MGD, and extend the plant’s life span by 30 years. The $150 million AWPF will be a 10 MGD direct potable water reuse facility. It will purify the effluent water received from RRBWWTP, and the treated water will be sent directly to the distribution system. The new system will produce an additional 10 million gallons of fresh drinking water, helping El Paso Water Utilities meet the demands of a growing population and helping to mitigate the water shortage that many cities across the nation are facing.

“We are grateful to the El Paso Water Utilities for continuing their trust in us to help them solve El Paso’s water challenges by improving their existing plant and constructing a new state-of-the-art direct potable reuse facility,” said Brad Tackett, Business Development Manager, Sundt Industrial Group. “We look forward to continuing our great relationship with the city of El Paso and supporting them in their future endeavors.”
