Texas Transportation Commission Conditionally Awards Southeast Connector in Fort Worth to South-Point Constructors

FT. WORTH, TX — Motorists are one step closer to seeing improvements in one of the state’s most congested regions following a decision by the Texas Transportation Commission to conditionally select South-Point Constructors (SPC), a joint venture of Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. and Austin Bridge & Road, L.P., as the design-build contractor for the Southeast Connector project in Tarrant County.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will now negotiate contract terms with the selected design-build contractor; final award and execution is expected early 2022. This project will rebuild and widen approximately 16 miles of I-20 and I-820. The conditional award also includes an optional maintenance agreement to be implemented at TxDOT’s discretion.

The Texas Transportation Commission has designated the Southeast Connector project as part of the statewide Texas Clear Lanes initiative, a program to address the most congested chokepoints in the state.

The Southeast Connector will widen I-20 to 10 mainlanes from I-820 to US 287, and I-820 to eight mainlanes from I-20 to Spur 303 (Rosedale Street) and reconstruct the I-20, I-820, and US 287 interchanges.

“This highly-anticipated project will tie in the east and southeast part of Tarrant County to the central part of the county. It’s not only important for Tarrant County and Fort Worth, but also facilitates trade, increases safety, and improves efficiency for the entire Metroplex,” said Texas Transportation Commissioner Robert C. Vaughn. “Upon completion, this project will represent the largest investment in transportation infrastructure in the history of TxDOT’s Fort Worth district.”

The Southeast Connector project is anticipated to begin design and construction in summer 2022 and conclude in 2027. Contract execution will occur in spring 2022.
