Alterman Hosts Kidstruction Dig Day at New Campus Site

LIVE OAK, TX — Alterman and The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company recently hosted their first Kidstruction event at the site of the future home of the Alterman Corporate Campus. There were over 200 children in attendance at the real-life construction site.

With the groundbreaking of the Alterman Corporate Campus having taken place on September 15, the first phase of construction was groundwork. Knowing that there would be weeks of digging, excavation, and ground leveling, Alterman and Whiting-Turner saw an opportunity to get the community involved.

Children participated in their own "excavations" with toys provided by M&M Contracting, which were later donated to Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA). All children were given hard hats and safety vests upon arrival provided by Milwaukee.

There was also face painting sponsored by Studio8 Architects and a snow cone truck sponsored by Project Control. Families were invited to sit in bleachers, provided by Frost, so they could see from the construction taking place from above.

In addition to showing off the equipment working on the site, the event featured a Dig Zone for kids to do hands-on excavations in their own hard hats and vests and a viewing zone for them to watch the vehicles in action. The event also included face painting, a picture station, and goodie bags. Kona Ice, donuts, and a coffee truck were on hand for refreshments.

Families from the entire construction team and sponsor firms as well as children served by Child Advocates San Antonio, located near the site, were invited. As an employee-owned firm, Alterman provides opportunities for its team and their collaborators to come together and create a supportive and dynamic environment.

“At Alterman, part of our purpose statement is to be stewards of the community, and what better way than by inviting our youth out to engage with the construction process," said Alterman CEO Greg Padalecki. “We see our new campus as a site to hold various community activities that will open our doors to the public to give people a chance to know what our capabilities truly are. We look forward to hosting this event and look forward to all future events where everyone can enjoy what our campus has to offer.”

In addition to Alterman and The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, the event was sponsored by M&M Contracting, Project Control, Frost Bank, Milwaukee, and Studio8 Architects. The construction team for the new campus also includes Project Control as owner’s representative, Pape Dawson as civil engineer, Rialto Studio as landscape architect, Clear Zimmerman as MEP engineer, and Dunaway as structural engineer.

Studio8 Architects will design the new 19.7-acre campus, located at the junction of Loop 1604 and I-35 in Live Oak. The project broke ground September 15 and has a planned completion of January 2024.
