TxDOT Announces Benavidez as San Antonio District Engineer

SAN ANTONIO, TX — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announces Charles Benavidez, PE has been selected as the San Antonio District Engineer. In his role as District Engineer, Benavidez will oversee the planning, designing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the state transportation system in 12 counties surrounding the greater San Antonio region. Benavidez will also be responsible for the district’s $4 billion transportation project portfolio — the second largest in the state.

“We are thrilled to welcome Charles in his new role and are confident that his skills and expertise will play a pivotal role at the San Antonio District,” said TxDOT Director of District Operations Carl Johnson. “His intimate knowledge of regional projects combined with steady leadership make Charles the obvious choice to guide future transportation in the San Antonio area.”

Benavidez began his TxDOT career in 2004 as a summer hire working on the JFK Causeway. He graduated with a civil engineering degree from Texas A&M University - Kingsville in 2006 through TxDOT’s conditional grant program.

In May 2006, he began his full-time career in the Corpus Christi District where he worked in various positions including construction, design, and maintenance. He became the Sinton Area Engineer in the Corpus Christi District in 2015 and Corpus Christi Area Engineer in 2017. Benavidez began serving as the Deputy District Engineer for the Corpus Christi District in July 2021.

Benavidez most recently served as the Deputy District Engineer for the San Antonio District where he managed over 200 active transportation projects including the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) Design Build Central and South projects, Loop 1604 North Corridor projects, as well as the I-10 East Corridor projects.

“I am excited for the opportunity to expand my role at the San Antonio District and lead a group of dedicated and experienced professionals as we continue our work of delivering a safe and reliable transportation system that increases connectivity for our region,” Benavidez said.
