Turner Construction Company Hosts Eight-Week Program for Local SMWBE Businesses

HUNTSVILLE, AL — Turner Construction Company, a general contractor with offices in Huntsville since the 1950s, is inviting local small, disadvantaged, minority-owned, women-owned, and veteran-owned businesses to an eight-week workshop designed to grow their business and find opportunities to work on major construction projects in the area.

The program, Turner School of Construction Management, is free to qualified businesses, but space is limited. To be eligible, businesses must be a construction-oriented firm in business for at least three years and must be certified as a small or minority-owned business. The program begins March 8 with classes on Fridays in the Bryant Bank Community Room.

Turner School of Construction Management is an education and community outreach program in the commercial construction industry. The program presents an opportunity for firms to improve their economic viability by enhancing their managerial, technical, and administrative skills while networking with similar businesses. Companies also learn how to make themselves more visible to large general contractors.

Turner aims to secure at least 20 percent of subcontract work through Small, Minority-, and Woman-Owned Business Enterprises (SMWBE) but exceeds 30 percent on many projects.

Turner is a North America-based, international construction services company. Since 1986, Turner’s Huntsville office has served clients in a variety of market segments, including aerospace, industrial, government, education, and commercial.

The Huntsville office has completed work at Cummings Research Park, Redstone Arsenal, and the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, and has been instrumental in building the industrial and manufacturing corridor along the Tennessee River in nearby Decatur, Alabama. Recent and current construction projects managed by Turner in Huntsville include the new Huntsville City Hall, The Huntsville Botanical Garden Visitor Center, and Toyota Field.
